About

Don't let those kind eyes and that sometimes mustachioed smile fool you. Underneath all that is a real badass. I'm taking a fairly literal approach to this whole "About Me" section. Honestly I find the whole idea of a website devoted to a person (written by that person) blatantly narcissistic. So here are some things about (around) me.People About Me
My wife, my daughter, my son, family, friends.
Other Life About Me
Trees, Frankie the dog, the bees (we are beekeepers).
Things About Me
Creative things: painting, woodworking, writing, reading lots of books.
Experiences About Me
Hiking, travel, good conversations, good questions to ponder.
Work About Me
Eighth Grade Physical Science teacher (that's physics and chemistry).

Recent Work

Recent work could be within the last few years. I seem to go in long stretches where nothing gets done on a canvas. Other projects (home remodeling, landscaping) often crowd out the creative endeavor. I'm always hoping to balance things out a bit better.

I've recently been inspired by the work of Swiss-German artist Paul Klee. His ridiculous playfulness is reminiscent of childhood carelessness and danger. Much of his work is watercolor, but this is oil (30 x 30)

This is the Khan el Khalili bazaar in Cairo (2016). I took the photo as we strolled through the maze of people and shops. Mindy (left) and our guide, Hanna (right) lead the way.oil on canvas

My favorite coffee mug holds a bit over 24oz. It took me a while to find one that felt right and held enough. I thought at first I would paint the mug full of coffee but I like the pattern on the inside and decided to leave it empty. Perhaps there's a pool of coffee lurking just below the rim.oil on canvas

This Peruvian couple looked like they were out for a day of shopping. Our first day in Cusco (2014) was spent exploring local sites and local food (along with acclimating to the altitude). The Plaza de Armas was much more crowded than I've shown, bustling with tourists and locals enjoying the crisp, sunny day.oil on canvas

This is a side canal in Venice (2019). We turned the corner and walked over a small bridge that opened onto these waiting gondolas. In the distance you can just see the edge of the famous Rialto Bridge.oil on canvas

I painted this for my daughter Hannah. She loves lotus flowers. This is from a photo taken of one of the ponds at the Atlanta Botanical Garden.oil on canvas

I suppose every painter should do at least one self-portrait. I painted the first one as part of an art class I took at CCAD (Columbus College of Art and Design). The second was painted at a time of derangement.oil on canvas

I painted these gnarly trees for my son Kenan, who has become quite the bonsai artist. I began with the idea of a more realistic approach but as I worked it became more and more fanciful.oil on canvas
